The first nationwide No Kings protest was held on June 14 of this year, Flag Day, also the day of a military parade in Washington, DC, and Donald Trump’s birthday. Nationwide, according to organizers, the event drew as many as 5 million people to peaceful protests in roughly 2,000 communities across all 50 states.
More than 2,200 No Kings II protests are planned for October 18. In the 127 days since June 14, much has happened to enrage the president’s critics, and coastal organizers are expecting larger turnouts than in June. From Astoria to Gold Beach, Indivisible chapters are organizing 13 protests in communities on the Oregon coast on October 18.
Indivisible formed during the first Trump administration. The group has roughly 2,500 local chapters nationwide. The overarching goal of the No Kings protests is a broad-based, peaceful, geographically dispersed mass protest by everyday Americans.
On June 14, 2025, based on protest organizers’ estimates, roughly 7,800 people turned out for 14 protests in Oregon coastal communities.
Event organizers estimate these crowd sizes for No Kings I on June 14, 2025:
Astoria: 1,500
Seaside: 500
Cannon Beach: 60
Manzanita: 450
Tillamook: 500
Nehalem: 12
Pacific City: 14
Lincoln City: 1,000
Newport: 1,000
Yachats: 600
Florence: 500-600
Coos Bay/North Bend: 850
Bandon: 350
Gold Beach: 400
Shar Walbaum is an organizer for Indivisible Lincoln City and the No Kings II event host. Several coastal events will feature musical acts and speakers.
“We’ve got two things happening in Lincoln City for this national day of action,” Walbaum told me by phone. “First, we’re going to have a program at the Congregational church, ‘Words to Inform and Songs to Inspire.’
“For speakers, we’re really lucky because Senator Merkley is writing a statement for us, and that’s going to be read by Nora Sherwood, who is also an organizer with Indivisible Lincoln City. State Representative [David] Gomberg is going to speak, and Mayor Susan Wahlke.”
The musical performers will be Peace Band and Pipe Dance.
Walbaum continued, “The head librarian at the Driftwood Library, Kirsten Brodbeck-Kenney, is going to talk about the trickle-down effect of the cuts to libraries and museums and how they’re going to affect things like summer reading programs for kids.
“And then also Nancy Mitchell, who is the executive director of Food Share of Lincoln County, is going to talk about food scarcity, what’s happening with their [food pantry] shelves. Food Share supplies a whole bunch of different [Lincoln County communities] with all sorts of foods. And with the cuts that are coming, they won’t have any federal funding to buy perishable foods like milk and cheese and eggs, so she’s going to talk about that.”
Following the event at the Congregational church, the protest moves to Hwy 101, along the blocks north and south of NW 25th Street.
“People will be standing on the street for two hours, from one to three, and they’ll have various signs, of course. The theme is that we are a democracy, by the people, of the people, not someone or some ones who have a lot of money, and to basically stand up for democracy.”
