Newport, Oregon, 9/2/25 – The second annual Community Repair Fair will be held on
Saturday, October 4th from 10am – 2pm at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine
Science Center (HMSC) in Newport. Hosted by Oregon Sea Grant, the Hatfield Innovation
Lab, and the HMSC Green Team, this free public event offers opportunities for coastal
residents to get their broken household items repaired at no cost, as well as gain skills to
make their own repairs.
Give your favorite things a chance for continued use instead of sending them to the
landfill. Do you have a broken small appliance? Have you discovered a rip in your clothing
or other fabric item? Did your lamp stop working? Does your bicycle need attention? Bring it
to the Repair Fair.
How it works: Members of the public are invited to bring in broken household items to the
Repair Fair and get matched with a volunteer “Expert Fixer” who will attempt a repair. Most
people stay with their item during its repair to learn about the process. The event will also
feature repair skills workshops throughout the day, and community organizations will be on
hand to share sustainability resources and waste reduction strategies.
Last year, more than 30 volunteers served as Expert Fixers, presenters, or general event
helpers, and more than 75% of the nearly 100 items brought to the Repair Fair were fixed.
Repaired items included bicycles, lamps, jewelry, dull tools, clothing, linens, hats, a
vacuum cleaner, headphones, lantern, broom, jewelry box, fan, purse, radio, backpack,
chainsaw, rocking chair, microscope, smartphone, plate, curling iron, toaster, bird feeder,
and a set of wobbly stools. What will you bring to the Repair Fair?
