Lincoln County Asks That the Coast Guard Helicopter Remain in Newport

November 12, 2025 – The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners is gravely concerned about reports that the Coast Guard rescue helicopter stationed for decades at the Newport Airport has been relocated some 100 miles away.

Newport hosts one of the largest crabbing fleets on the West Coast and the largest in Oregon. Dungeness crabbing is famously among the most dangerous occupations, and news of the relocation of the helicopter comes at an especially critical time with the impending beginning of commercial crabbing season. Every year, the helicopter conducts dozens of rescue operations, returning imperiled boat crews and others to their homes and families.

More than 10 years ago. when the Coast Guard announced plans to close the Newport Air Station, the community rallied to retain this lifesaving resource. Commissioners joined those voices, adopting a resolution opposing the move. Members of Congress were convinced to keep the station open in the appropriations bill.

The helicopter is no less crucial now, and the community is again raising the alarm. Commissioners urge the Department of Homeland Security and Coast Guard to return the helicopter where it will be best positioned to save the lives of our neighbors and visitors.
