(Salem, OR) — Governor Kate Brown will visit Oregon Health & Science University and meet with patients receiving life-saving treatments for their pre-existing conditions on Friday, July 6. The Governor will discuss the federal government’s refusal to defend health coverage for vulnerable Americans with pre-existing conditions, the latest in a line of attacks aimed at dismantling comprehensive and affordable health care coverage.
“Every single one of us has a friend or a loved one with a pre-existing condition such as cancer, a heart condition, or diabetes,” Governor Brown said. “Health care coverage is under attack at a federal level, and I will fight to ensure critical protections for those with pre-existing conditions remain intact. It’s up to the states to fill the void of leadership on this issue, and we will make our voices heard.”
In June, Governor Brown led governors from eight other states who voiced their concerns with Attorney General Jeff Sessions over his refusal to defend coverage of people with pre-existing medical conditions in a lawsuit brought by a district in Texas against the United States. She also addressed attorneys general from across the United States on the topic.
At OHSU, Governor Brown will tour an infusion center and meet with patients with pre-existing conditions, along with their care providers. Members of the media are welcome to attend the press event, which will be immediately followed by a media availability with the governor and OHSU patients.
Those who plan to attend or need additional information should contact Press Secretary Kate Kondayen at kate.kondayen@oregon.gov or 503-689-0248, and Amanda Gibbs at gibbam@ohsu.edu or 503-494-5640.
